Authorities have identified the teen who was suspected of drowning in a small neighborhood lake in Petal on Sunday night as 18-year-old Cayden Magee, according to Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem.
Emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of a possible drowning in the Petal area. Despite rapid response efforts, the teen was recovered from the water and later pronounced deceased at the scene.
Magee had recently graduated from Petal High School in May, a milestone that was widely celebrated by family, friends, and school staff. He was remembered by those who knew him as an outstanding student who consistently demonstrated academic excellence, discipline, and determination throughout his education.
He graduated with honors and earned several academic recognitions, including an Academic Endorsement, Career & Technical Endorsement, and ACT Benchmark achievement. Teachers and classmates described him as a focused and respectful young man who was committed to his studies and determined to succeed.
Following graduation, Magee had already planned his next step, having committed to Mississippi State University where he intended to pursue a pre-med track. His goals reflected a strong passion for learning and a desire to enter the medical field to help others.
News of his sudden passing has left the Petal community in shock and deep sorrow. Family members, friends, and former classmates are remembering him as a bright and promising young man whose future held great potential.
Officials have confirmed that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. At this time, authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected.
