Family, friends, and members of the Lincolnton community are mourning the tragic loss of 18-year-old Austin Shyjuan Washington, who died following a drowning incident at Lake James near Linville Dam in Burke County on Saturday evening.
According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on June 13 after emergency dispatchers received a 911 call around 6:30 p.m. reporting that a person had entered the water near the rock face west of the Duke Energy water intake area near Linville Dam and failed to resurface.
The report triggered a large-scale search and rescue operation involving water rescue teams from more than a dozen agencies. Crews searched the area for several hours before locating Austin in the water shortly after 9:00 p.m. Despite extensive efforts by first responders, he was recovered deceased.
Authorities officially identified the victim on Monday as Austin Shyjuan Washington of Lincolnton. Investigators have confirmed that no foul play is suspected, and the case is being treated as an accidental drowning.
News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from family members, friends, and community members, many of whom have struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young life.
A GoFundMe fundraiser titled “Honoring Austin: A Brother and Friend Forever” was created by close friend Skye Jones to assist the family with funeral arrangements, memorial services, and cremation expenses. As of Monday morning, the fundraiser had already raised more than $1,700 toward its $4,500 goal, reflecting the strong support from those who knew and loved him.
As the community continues to grieve, Austin is being remembered as a young man whose life ended far too soon, leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on all who knew him.
